Why Is Heroin a Popular Drug in Washington State?

Last updated: Wednesday, 30, September 2020

The use of heroin has a long history in Washington State, and much of the reason for it being popular is because it is a cheaper alternative to prescription opioids. Along with this, heroin is a highly addictive drug and results in intense physical and psychological addiction. Since the state has made significant progress in reducing the overprescribing of opioids, heroin has become more predominantly used by addicts. This is, in fact, a common trend being seen within other states who have increased efforts to reduce the number of opioid prescriptions given to residents. Heroin is among the top five drugs most abused in Washington State and has become one of the greatest drug threats in the state.

The most common drug mentioned in police reports has been heroin, and many of the heroin users today started with prescription opioids. In 2015 the state saw the steepest rise in drug-related deaths over the last 17 years, and heroin-related overdose deaths have quadrupled. For example, from 2008 to 2014 the number of heroin overdose deaths doubled. King County in the state has seen the most heroin use related deaths in the past 20 years. The admissions into treatment programs for heroin abuse have never been higher, and more addicts are seeking out help than never before. Many of the state authorities believe that around 80% of heroin users today were originally addicted to prescription opioids.

The demographics in which heroin addiction impacts are widespread, but typically the age group that sees the most overdose deaths are those between 24 to 44 years old. Seattle and Tacoma are the hot spots and are easily accessible for drug traffickers because of the road systems and shipping ports. The city of Seattle has the densest population of heroin users when compared to other municipalities in the state. If you are struggling with a heroin addiction it is important to find the right type of help. Drug treatment programs throughout the state can help addicts and their families.
