Last updated: Tuesday, 29, September 2020

Methadone maintenance does not work because of how addictive the drug is and how severe the withdrawal symptoms are. Methadone is a drug that is designed to help a person to stay off opioids, however; methadone is an opioid that is far more addictive than most pain medications. Methadone maintenance will only work if the methadone user is not taking the drug for the long-term. Methadone should not be used as the primary source of drug treatment and rehabilitation for opioid addiction. Unfortunately, this is why methadone is not effective.

When someone becomes addicted to opioids, there will be an initial fear connected to the withdrawals. Methadone will help an opioid addict avoid these withdrawals, and some drug rehabilitation centers within the United States can work with addicts who are taking methadone. The problem with methadone is the user will develop physical and psychological dependency and tolerance to the drug. Methadone is a dangerous drug when the user is taking large amounts because of their on-going tolerance for the drug. Methadone maintenance does not work because opioid addicts stay on the drug longer than needed and do not get any further help or go to drug rehab.
