Within the state of Florida, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Program is the single state authority on substance abuse and mental health. The Florida Department of Health partners with the Florida Department of Children and Families seeking to prevent and reduce substance abuse and its negative effects on health. Throughout the state are also non-profit organizations providing drug prevention. There is also the Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association, which was incorporated in 1981. It is a non-profit membership association representing substance abuse and prevention and treatment providers. The association also works with managing entities and community anti-drug coalitions.
The Florida Department of Children provides recovery support and treatment for addicts and families. This also includes substance abuse prevention designed to impede the development of substance abuse problems among youth. Drug prevention and education is often the first line of defense when helping youth understand the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Throughout many schools across Florida, drug prevention programs are implemented to provide current and up to date information. Local communities within the various counties also deliver specific forms of prevention to help the members of these communities.
