The Georgia Council on Substance Abuse provides education and training relevant to the addiction and recovery field. They also act as a clearinghouse of information on substance abuse prevention, treatment, and recovery orientated systems of care. The organization also influences policy to improve the availability and effectiveness of prevention, treatment, and recovery support services. the GCSA also provides advocacy that mobilizes and organizes Georgia's recovery communities. As well, the organization promotes the benefits of recovery and eliminates discrimination against people seeking recovery. They are a non-profit organization, which was founded in 2001.

The GCSA was founded by a group of caring individuals wanting to create solutions for people's drug addiction problems. The organization provides a Certified Addiction Recovery Empowerment Specialist training academy and has trained over 450 people to date. They are also a founding member of the Association of Recovery Community Organizations, which is an active force on the local, state, and national levels. The organization helps communities understand the value of peer-run community-based services and support. Organizations such as GCSA are important for local communities. Many recovering addicts need more support and help when they finish drug treatment Georgia. It is important to stay connected to peer support and organizations that are involved with the community.
