Most people who are addicted to drugs, and alcohol will be an emotional roller coaster because the drugs and alcohol will impact the development of serotonin and dopamine. Many family members become frightened of the possible outbursts and reactions or scared of the emotional instability. It is important for family and loved ones to understand that this is all because of the drug addiction, and drug abuse will make a person emotionally unstable. Some of the things to avoid while dealing with drug addicts is direct confrontations and arguments, of course this is not easy to do, because everyone tends to lose their temper. It is important to remain calm, and continue to be understanding, and more important to remain rational in thought and actions.

One of the most common problems that family member's struggle with is enabling an addict. Enabling is allowing the addict to continue using and supporting their drug use with picking up their responsibility, whether it is financial or through other ways. It is important to never enable a drug addict, as it sends the message that it is ok that they continue to use drugs, because their family and loved ones will pick up the slack. Finally, family and loved ones should never condemn the person for abusing drugs and alcohol, but rather always offer support in the way of drug rehabilitation and counseling. An addict makes a choice to abuse drugs and alcohol, and they must take responsibility for this choice.
