According to the 2018 Monitoring the Future Survey, adolescent drug abuse is on the decline. The past year use of illicit drugs other than marijuana held steady at some of the lowest levels in over two decades. However, some of the most commonly abused drugs among teen girls, is tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs. Most adolescents get these drugs from someone they know or family members. There are countless reasons why they would choose to abuse drugs and alcohol. Some of it can even start with being bored. The abuse of alcohol among high school students has been on the decline over the past five years.

However, this is still a popular drug among adolescent teen girls. Many national surveys have shown that teen girls who are either 14 or 15 will start drinking earlier than teen boys. Despite male adults consuming much more alcohol than adult women. When young women start drinking early in life, they tend to stop around their early twenties. Unfortunately, much of the damage has already been done. Alcohol has a significant impact on the developing brain and drastically impacts the teen's ability to learn and retain memory.

Tobacco and marijuana are still the most widely used drugs among adolescents. Marijuana is easily gotten, and most adolescent girls will get the drug from friends or family. If parents can focus on early prevention, they will ensure these problems will not persist. Despite the recent decline in teen drug abuse, many families in the nation struggle with teens abusing these substances.
