What Age Groups Are Affected by Drug Abuse in Louisiana?

The state of Louisiana is home to well over 4.6 million people, and more than 1.5 million are over the age of 50. Roughly 26% of the population is between 20 to 39, and around 26% is between the ages of 40 to 59 years old. Drug and alcohol abuse does affect people from all age groups throughout the state. Much of the data being collected in the state of Louisiana shows the continuing need for drug prevention and rehabilitation. For example, the youth in Louisiana consistently report higher rates of alcohol use than the rest of the nation. Among 8th, 10th, and 12th graders, the use of alcohol exceeded national rates. In 2016, the youth of Louisiana reported a 14.1% rate of alcohol use for 30 days and the national average is 7.3%, and binge drinking was reported at 7.8%, where the national average was 3.4%.

Louisiana is the twenty-second largest state, and two-thirds of the population is concentrated in eight metropolitan areas. The state of Louisiana is one of the most culturally, economically, and ecologically diverse states in the nation. Cocaine and crack cocaine has always represented a threat within the state. Crack cocaine is most often associated with violent crime, and current users of cocaine have used the drug one or more times in the last 30 days. Heroin has been a rising problem within the state, and around 12% of the male addicts between 26 and 30 are using cocaine. Methamphetamine abuse in the state has been a growing problem in the state, and police in parts of the state have an increase in domestic violence because of methamphetamine. Most of the methamphetamine users in the state are male and between the ages of 15 and 40 years old.

Marijuana is the most widely used drug in the state, and more than 40% of high school students in Louisiana had tried marijuana during their lifetimes. Roughly 20% of high school students have used marijuana within the last 30 days, and 10% have tried marijuana before the age of 13 years old. However, the marijuana abuse rates in the state are slightly lower than the national average. Some reports have shown that over 14% of the people in Louisiana aged 18 to 25 uses marijuana, which is lower than the national average of 17%. Drug and alcohol abuse must be treated with drug rehabilitation programs in the state of Louisiana.
